Sabi Sand Game Reserve

MalaMala Camp Location Map

MalaMala is one of South Africa's legendary and exclusive safari destinations and is internationally acknowledged as one of the 'top game viewing destinations in the world'.

Only guests accommodated at one of the 3 MalaMala camps may traverse this immense 13,500 hectares of privately owned game land.  Daily safaris are conducted in open 4-wheel drive vehicles to track down Africa's Big 5 - lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo. After dark, spotlight safaris provide the opportunity to view nocturnal creatures and carnivores on the hunt. Walking safaris can also be arranged on request.

MalaMala Camp is set in beautiful surroundings on the banks of the Sand River. The camp is unfenced - an oasis in the middle of the bushveld - and every aspect of the camp is designed to appreciate and enjoy the view of the surrounding wilderness. Massive trees and rolling green lawns are filled with birdsong, with the occasional antelope or elephant which seeks the succulence of the greenery.

The spacious and beautifully decorated guest lounge leads onto an expansive wooden deck which provides an elevated view of animals drinking and bathing in the river. Dinner under the stars in a reed enclosed boma or around a log fire, under the starry African sky, is yet another highlight of the MalaMala experience.

Pathways wind their way along the perimeter of the camp to reveal 19 individual ochre coloured and thatched rooms and suites, which are tucked into the greenery which flanks the Sand River. Each one offers views of the surrounding bush from a private verandah.

The luxury and comfort of the camp, combined with the exhilarating game drives and guided walks in the beautiful and unspoilt MalaMala Reserve, is incomparable.

Bush Walks / Walking Safaris

Children under the age of 16 are not permitted to partake in nature/bush walks. A respectable grasp of the English language should be understood by any guest partaking in a nature walk at MalaMala.

Walks are conducted in the latter morning part of the day and the duration depends on the weather and the people doing the walk and interests of those people. Most walks are between an hour or two and are not challenging. These are conducted out in the reserve and are on the road, in open areas, so that any animals that are approaching can be seen. There is a ranger who leads the walk and then a ranger driving a vehicle behind in case of danger. All rangers are qualified to conduct the walks. The walks are for the smaller things such as plants, trees, insects, birds etc, things that tend to be missed a little while driving on game drive.

Guest safety is of the utmost importance and the responsibility lies with the ranger leading the nature walk and it is at his/her discretion of who can partake in a the nature walk or the type of nature walk that will be conducted.

On arrival, the ranger looking after the family will assess the age, enthusiasm and independence of the children and in collaboration with the parents and guardians, various activities will be offered.

A MalaMala backpack including an interactive check-list, bird and mammal colouring books, compass and thermometer, lip-ice and water are given to each child between the ages of 4 and 12.

The ranger allocated to the family will, throughout their stay, offer some of the following activities

:The tracking of various animals from their spoor markings; Teach basic survival skills (where to find water, what plants are good to eat, medicinal uses of plants, the toothbrush and loo paper trees); Warning signs of dangerous animals and first aid for emergency situations in the bush; A bush breakfast enables children to learn how to make fire and to participate in the meal preparation; Children are able to communicate on the radio (out of game drive times).

Special meals and “ration packs” are prepared for children.

Babysitters are available in the evenings if required.

In camp there are children's movies, wildlife movies (filmed on MalaMala) and board games. ::

Start TestimonialGreat sightings at both camps, by excellent rangers, saw cheetah (x1 at Mala Mala, x3 at Inyati), wild dogs at both and Inyati with a kill, lions at both (Mala Mala over 3 days with a kill, but Inyati had 3 male lions), saw everything at both but elephants having a mud bath was a highlight at Inyati. Food and service was great at both, slightly more relaxing at Inyati as there was a longer break in the day more flexibilty on moving around and mingling. Would do both camps again and they complimented each other. End Testimonial
