Hwange National Park
Little Makalolo lies in the heart of Hwange National Park, in one of its best game viewing areas, overlooking a vibrant waterhole.
Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe, covering 14,651 square km with varied habitats and vegetation types - meaning that game drives are exciting with always something new to be seen. There is also no better way to experience this Park than on foot with an experienced safari guide.
Hwange’s mix of different landscape types means that game viewing is productive year-round. Wildlife frequently encountered in the area includes lion, large herds of elephant, buffalo, leopard, spotted hyaena, giraffe, sable, blue wildebeest, impala, waterbuck and reedbuck. In summer, wildebeest, zebra and eland are found in abundance on the open plains, while in winter elephant congregate in enormous numbers around the waterholes.
An authentic village experience can also be enjoyed by guests. Usually around 4 hours and guided by one of the local villagers or a camp guide, it often includes a guided tour of the school, meeting the headman or headwoman and enjoying cultural exchanges with the villagers.
Little Makalolo offers privacy for guests who enjoy small camps and a sense of remoteness. The camp's 6 traditional-style tents - including a family unit - are spacious and en-suite, with indoor and outdoor showers.
Linking the tents to the main area are teak walkways. Here a false mopane tree in the centre of the camp shades a separate dining and living area, with an open fire area for those convivial evening fireside tales. There is a log-pile hide overlooking the waterhole in front of camp where guests can enjoy wildlife viewing during the siesta hours and pool for cooling down in the midday sun.
Guests can also choose to spend a romantic night at the Star Bed, surrounded by nature underneath the canopy of millions of stars. Situated on a raised platform overlooking a pan, the Star Bed is just a 20 minute drive away from camp and offers a truly secluded and remote wilderness experience.
