High on the Nteko Ridge, above the swirling clouds, above the deep emerald Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where the rare and wonderful mountain gorillas of Uganda make their home, lies a luxury retreat for visitors to the National Park. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is the first of its kind here, part of the IGCP’s tri-national programme that benefits both the local community and a vital conservation programme working hard to ensure the gorillas’ survival.
Located as it is in the southern part of the Park, the lodge is just steps away from the trailhead for tracking the Nkuringo gorilla family (the largest and friendliest of Bwindi’s accessible troops), making it an ideal base for travellers seeking what David Attenborough called one of the most exciting encounters of his life.
To ensure minimal intrusion on the gorillas’ lives and habitat, permit holders are restricted to one hour with an ape family once they have been located, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the comforts of the lodge.
Guests stay in one of 10 volcanic stone cottages, with cosy fireplaces, big picture windows, loft-like interiors and specially commissioned art by the ‘Clouds 9’, a group of the country’s most respected local artists. You’ll also find a sheltered veranda perfect for a cocktail or a cup of tea, taking in the remote beauty of the forest and the breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes glowing red on the horizon.
Massage and beauty treatments, are also available, along with bird watching, guided forest walks, and delicious local delicacies fresh from the kitchen, while a private butler will ensure you have everything you need throughout your stay. It’s no wonder that this eco-lodge gem continues to win awards.
