Malaria-Free reserve near Durban
The 1,500 hectare Thula Thula Game Reserve is less than 2 hours drive from Durban in a malaria-free area of KwaZulu-Natal. Historically part of the private hunting grounds of legendary Zulu King Shaka, founder of the Zulu empire, Thula Thula is today a private sanctuary for Africa's famous wildlife. In Zulu, the name Thula Thula means 'peace and tranquility'.
Whlist Thula Thula is not one of the larger reserve in the area, it is never-the-less home to a diverse African wildlife population, including elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, giraffe, zebra, nyala, hyenas, crocodile, kudu, wildebeest and a spectacular variety of other indigenous species, great and small. Birdlife is prolific with over 350 species.
Guests here can choose to stay in either the 4* Elephant Safari Lodge, with its ethnic and colonial style decorated chalets, or rediscover nature in great style at the Luxury Tented Camp. Boat cruises on nearby St Lucia or a visit to the Battlefields can be arranged for guests at an additional cost. The reserve also offers a day visitor programme for people with limited time, which includes a game drive and either breakfast, lunch or dinner, depending on the time of day you visit.
