A sanctuary to a large variety of wildlife
Surrounded by the majestic Lebombo mountains and the shimmering waters of Lake Jozini, the malaria-free Pongola Game Reserve is a sanctuary to a large variety of wildlife and offers a spectacular setting for your safari. The area is home to many typical plains game species, including 4 of the Big 5 (so leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant, but not lion), hyena, giraffe, zebra and warthog. It is also a birding hotspot, as over 350 species have so far been recorded here.
The Pongola River, broad and perennial, meanders through the centre of the reserve before entering the man-made 13,276 hectare Lake Jozini. It provides a leisure environment unique for a South African bushveld destination.
Activities include guided game drives or bush walks, boat cruises on Lake Jozini, and fishing for tiger fish in the lake. Visits to local villages and schools can also be arranged.
