The Amakhala Game Reserve is a 8,500 hectare malaria-free game reserve situated just an hour from Port Elizabeth. A safari experience here will include twice daily game drives in the company of a professional ranger in search of the Big 5 of the African bush - lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. Over 16 antelope species are also here, alongside giraffe, wildebeest, zebra and cheetah.
As part of one game drive during your stay you can also enjoy a relaxing river cruise down the Bushmans River (subject to river levels). Guided walks with one of the qualified rangers are also offered (additional cost and on request). Riders looking for an unforgettable riding experience can saddle up for a ride on the wild side with Amakhala Horse Trails.
Woodbury Tented Camp is set in the heart of the reserve and the tranquil surroundings of the open bushveld allow you to truly experience a quiet getaway. Camp life is centred around the thatch-and-canvas dining and lounge area with its expansive deck overlooking the Woodbury plains. A wide variety of game species such as zebra, giraffe, buffalo and elephant can often be seen from the deck, while the haunting cry of fish eagles echoes across the valley. There is a pool for relaxing by in between game drives.
Guests can also enjoy a range of relaxing treatments by qualified beauty therapists, trained to pamper and soothe their clients - on request, guests can be taken over to the nearby Bush Lodge to enjoy their treatment.
Ten tents are on raised bases with private decks, providing seclusion and intimacy with the bush. Each canvas safari tent has an en-suite basin, shower and a separate private toilet. Four of the tents have breathtaking views looking out onto the reserve and the other tents are nestled amongst the trees.
Families are also able to enjoy the African bush together as there are 2 family tents hidden amongst the trees. These units comprise of 2 adjoining tents linked by a private wooden deck, enabling parents to enjoy some privacy while knowing the children are not far away.
Special offers for longer stays or when booked as part of a longer itinerary may apply - details on request.
In addition to the room rate, guests will also be charged the Amakhala Conservation Levy (pppn)

Woodbury Tented Camp was a fantastic experience - the rangers were knowledgable and enthusiastic - thought the drives might get a little boring for my 6 year old son but not at all - they were passionate about their jobs and their enthusiasm was infectious. We had four drives each lasting about three hours - the overall experience was memorable and the kids loved the rustic tents - would really recommend this. Thanks for organising the itinerary, we had a holiday of a lifetime!

We had a fabulous time - what a beautiful country and such friendly people!
As far as Amakhala is concerned, it surpassed our expectations. Our ranger was absolutely superb, a young fellow whose job was his vocation. In addition, the camp [Woodbury Tented Lodge] part of the reserve was not particularly busy, so out of our six game drives, my husband and I were the only guests on the land rover with Jaco! On the other two, there were three of us - a ratio almost unbeatable - personal service! And to crown the whole experience, we saw elephant every day - along with just about everything else! It was fantastic and we have hundreds of photos to enjoy.
I am so glad I found you and that you gave us such good advice. I shall now complete the survey attached to your e-mail.
Many thanks for everything and we will gladly recommend you and Amakhala to anyone.
J MACKENNA
Obviously not as luxurious as the more expensive lodge accommodation, but we thought it [Woodbury Tented Camp] was good value. It was too hot in the tents in the middle of the day (they had air coolers which helped, but not air-con). Otherwise, we thought our care was excellent, we had a very good, knowledgeable and committed ranger, and liked the whole ethos of the game park - very conservation-minded and caring of their animals. It was a fantastic experience and we saw a lot of wildlife.
