Ukhozi Lodge

Kariega Game Reserve is 11,500 hectares of pristine malaria-free wilderness in the Eastern Cape, just an 80 minute drive from Port Elizabeth. The reserve is home to 2 rivers - the picturesque Kariega and Bushman's Rivers - as well as the magnificent Big 5 and multitudes of other South African safari wildlife.  The abundance of indigenous wildlife spread across this vast tract of wilderness will ensure an authentic safari experience.

Each day begins with a morning safari into the South African bush where guests will experience the dawn of a new day as the landscape comes to life with the sunrise.  During one of your morning game drives, guests at Ukhozi Lodge will also enjoy a majestic cruise down the Kariega River on the Kariega Queen. Guests can also join a guided bush walk after breakfast with a ranger, providing the opportunity to walk amongst more than 25 species of game and abundant birdlife, or take a canoe out for a leisurely paddle down the Kariega River and watch in blissful silence as the river birds and animals go about their daily business.

During evening safaris guests may be lucky enough to witness the thrill of a lion hunt, or watch as a family of hippo emerge from the water for a night of grazing. As nocturnal life begins to stir, return safely to the lodge for a hearty dinner.

Ukhozi Lodge truly captures the romance and intimacy of Africa. Superbly sculptured from stone, wood and glass, this stylish and uniquely designed lodge forms idyllic spaces and nestles subtly into the landscape. Views are spectacular and the beautiful rim-flow pool on the valley edge is simply iconic, offering guests an unequalled panoramic view of the river plains teaming with wild animals. Meandering bush paths connect 10 luxurious air-conditioned suites, each offering complete privacy with their own breath-taking vistas and private plunge pools.

Between game drives, guests can soak up the sun around Ukhozi's outdoor pool or enjoy a spa treatment. In the evenings, unwind in front of warm log fires, enjoy sumptuous cuisine or simply share experiences of the African bush with fellow guests.

Bush Walks / Walking Safaris

Children under the age of 16 years are not permitted on guided walks in the reserve. The final decision on whether a guest can join a guided bush walk remains with the guide and lodge manager.

Directions For Drivers

From Port Elizabeth: Travel along the N2 towards Grahamstown. After approximately 50 km, take the off-ramp towards Port Alfred (R72). At the T-junction, turn right. Continue along the R72, and travel approximately 47 km until you reach Alexandria.

Continue through Alexandria until you are at the Kenton-on-Sea turnoff, and then turn left. Continue along this road for approximately 14 km and the Kariega Game Reserve Entrance will be signposted.

General Information For Guests

Each suite has a large en-suite bathroom and is fully air conditioned, and also has a private plunge pool and deck offering panoramic views of the valley. Other features include a mini-bar, inside shower, a hair dryer, tea/coffee making facilities, a safe and a telephone.

There is internet connectivity at the main lodge.

The main lodge area has a rim flow pool and a boma.

Activities that are available include morning and afternoon game drives, river cruises, guided bush walks, fishing and canoeing excursions.

The Kariega Wellness Centre offers a range of luxurious treatments and therapies (additional cost).

Your rate also includes a compulsory Conservation and Community Levy - this contribution will aid conservation efforts as well as the anti-poaching unit and community projects.

All major credit cards are accepted except Diners Club cards.

A laundry service is available (additional cost).
