South Luangwa National Park
Luangwa River Camp lies on the banks of the Luangwa River, which forms the border of the world renowned South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, and also marks the end of the Great Rift Valley. The area is perhaps one of the few last unspoilt wilderness areas in Africa, and covers an area of over 9,000 square km.
The ox bow lagoons, woodlands and plains of the Luangwa Valley boasts over 400 species of birds, as well as hosting vast concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo, wild dog and the puku, which is endemic to the region.
Activities that can be enjoyed by guests include walking safaris, day and night drives, and visits to the local village and wildlife centre.
The lodge is situated in a game management area across the Luangwa River from South Luangwa National Park, so drives in the Park start with a short boat trip across the river in the earlier part of the season, or in the later/drier months, you simply drive straight across the river. Most of the guided walks take place in the game management area, which although not actually part of the National Park, is still visited by herds of elephant, bush buck, the occasional leopard and various other animals.
Luangwa River Camp is nestled under an ancient ebony grove, and offers all the creature comforts of a lodge yet retains the intimacy and privacy of a bush camp. Only 10 people can be accommodated at any one time in just 5 bush suites. Each suite has a sunken bath tub and shower in the stunning en-suite bathroom. Both the bedroom and bathroom have large sliding doors leading onto a decked area allowing a lovely breeze into the room and great views onto the river.
The main camp area stretches over various elevated decked levels amongst which a tempting double plunge pool with a waterfall linking each one. Seating areas around the pool or in the shade of the open plan bar on the highest level all offer uninterrupted views across the river and into the National Park.
