Lake Kariba
With the Zambezi escarpment as its backdrop, Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is located on a hill overlooking the game-rich shorelines of the vast Lake Kariba - one of the world's largest man made lakes. The lodge is easily accessible by light aircraft and boat and is the ideal location at the start and end of a Zimbabwe safari tour, or just to recharge your batteries partway through. The pace of life here is slow but still rewarding.
The lodge is situated on a private wildlife conservation area and also in close proximity to the Matusadona National Park. Both are home to lion, the occasional leopard and big herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as a multitude of different plains game. The area also offers incredible birdlife with hundreds of recorded species.
During your stay here, spend your days cruising on the water and watching the wildlife come down to the waters edge to drink, head out on a walking safari or go on a game drive in search of the resident lions. Guests can also indulge in superb fishing in the lake, with bream and tiger fish in abundance.
Cultural excursions are another activity. The African Bush Camps Foundation is committed to partnering with local communities, and this area is home to the Tonga, who have resided here for centuries. They have preserved ancient traditions and still live a largely subsistence lifestyle that is reliant on fishing, livestock and small scale farming. In the village of Chalala these customs have melted together with the inevitable infiltration of modern life, but the luxuries of a permanent electricity and water supply to homes are still absent, leaving the communities still largely reliant on the surrounding environment for their livelihood. With a guide, guests can visit the various projects the ABC Foundation is involved in here, including the local school and health centre.
There are a total of 10 rooms, all with balconies and uninhibited views over the lake. In addition there is also the private 2 bedroomed Baobab Villa, which consists of a living room, bar, indoor and outdoor dining decks, and comes with a private butler, safari guide and vehicle.
At the heart of Bumi Hills is the beautiful infinity pool that is surrounded by a terrace bar, an al fresco restaurant, lounge area and games room, and spa. The lodge is set on different levels so there are a few steps to climb.
