Rhino Plains Camp

Rhino Plains Camp

Kruger National Park

Rhino Plains Camp Location Map

Rhino Walking Safaris lets you discover nature's hidden wonders in specially tailored walking trails through a 12,000 hectare private wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park. The concession shares a 15 km unfenced boundary with the famous Mala Mala and Sabi Sand reserve with an abundance of wildlife moving freely between the two reserves. The concession is noted as an excellent game viewing area and good sightings can be expected.

Plains Camp is the ideal place for your Rhino Walking Safari. The camp is in the middle of the concession, where it seems the rest of the world no longer exists, and guests are ensured of superb game sightings.

A typical day at Plains Camp begins with a mug of steaming coffee and traditional homemade rusks, after which guests set out on their morning walk, following rhino tracks and elephant paths. The length of the walks is tailored to the interest and fitness of the guests.

Returning to camp, enjoy a leisurely brunch and relax by the plunge pool, keeping an eye on the waterhole for the breeding herd of elephant that frequently come to drink. Following high tea, set out again in the late afternoon for a walking safari or game drive and then indulge in a sunset cocktail.

Rhino Plains Camp has 4 luxury en-suite African explorer-style twin bedded tents overlooking the spectacular Timbitene plain and waterhole.

The camp is built in authentic pioneer tradition and is raised on wooden decks. Stylishly decorated, the camp offers the tranquility of a 19th century naturalist's retreat.

For something unique, there is also the added attraction of an optional night spent out under the stars at the sleepout decks under the care of a qualified guide. This is the only place in the Kruger National Park offering this unusual accommodation. Guests will leave Plains Camp in the late afternoon and arrive at the platforms in the early evening carrying a lightweight rucksack containing a change of clothes and refreshments.

Start TestimonialWe absolutely LOVED Rhino Plains Camp and the rhino walking safari. Our guide Andre was incredible and the camp was incredible. A very personal with fewer guests made it special. His knowledge and genuine love of the animals was infectious.End Testimonial

C HUNTER

Start TestimonialRhino Post and Plains Camp were super. They do the little things that make it special. We'd go back again. At Rhino there was a bottle of sparkling in our room on arrival, hot water bottles in the beds, quiet game drives and just the two of us on the first one, great wine cellar and the walks and guides were fantastic. Travel Butlers itself was superb! We learned that you requested certain rooms for us and everything was arranged flawlessly and at a great price. We would certainly call on Natasha again and recommend the company to friends and family.End Testimonial

Directions For Drivers

From Johannesburg/Pretoria: Take the N12/N4 highway to Nelspruit. From Nelspruit, take the R40 through White River and follow the signs to Hazyview. After approximately 45 km, you will go down a steep hill towards a T-junction. Turn left at the T-junction towards Hazyview. In Hazyview, turn right onto the R536 towards the Paul Kruger Gate, Kruger National Park.

There is a Kruger National Park Private Concession gate entry fee payable in cash at the entrance gate - this is currently R110 per person per stay - subject to change.

Enter the Park, and drive straight for approximately 12 km. You will reach a 4-way crossing. Proceed straight across for another 2 km, until you reach a T-junction. Turn left at this junction, and continue for approximately 1 km until you reach another 4-way crossing. Turn right here. You will cross a low water bridge (over the Sabi River), and approximately 4 km later you will cross the Sand River.

Keep heading straight, past the dirt road on the left signposted Maroela Loop. 6 km further, you will pass another dirt road, also signposted Maroela Loop. Approximately 1 km after the second dirt road you will see a dirt road on the left signposted Rhino Walking Safaris. Take this turning and proceed for 2.5 km. The road turns sharply left, after which you will travel another 2.7 km, leading you directly to Rhino Post Safari Lodge, where you must check in prior to your transfer to Plains Camp - transfers depart at 2 pm.

Do not get out of your car until you reach the camp. You may see some wildlife on your way - if you do, slow down and maintain a good distance. Do not drive off-road in any circumstances.

PLEASE NOTE: The Kruger National Park prohibits the use of roads within the Park before the gates are open and once the gates are closed, therefore guests need to plan their arrival and departure times carefully. You cannot arrange to leave the Park before the gates are open, and you must ensure that you arrive at the entrance gate with sufficient time to drive through the Park to reach your destination by the time the gate closes, otherwise you may not be permitted to enter.

Prior arrangements must be made to ensure there is an escort available.

Please note that the maximum speed limit in the Park is 50 km/h for tar roads and 40 km/h for gravel roads.

From the Nelspruit/Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport: Follow the airport signs toward the exit. At the T-junction/stop street, turn right onto the R538 and follow the signs to White River. Continue for approximately 10 km, until you reach White River. Continue straight out of White River on the R40 towards Hazyview and follow the directions as above.
