Summary Of The Route and Costs
If you are looking to tick lots of wildlife off your safari bucketlist of sightings, why not consider this 7 night itinerary combining a safari in Samburu and the iconic Masai Mara. The vast Mara plains are home to the Big 5 but a safari in Samburu will enable you to hopefully spot some unique animals - the ‘Samburu Special Five’ - which can only be seen in this area. The Special Five includes the blue necked Somali ostrich, the curious looking long necked gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe which has very distinct markings, the Grevy’s zebra which has very narrow stripes stopping at the belly and at the tail, and the Beisa oryx.
Located in the northern part of Kenya, Samburu is a fairly remote area which means the reserve is not as busy as other safari destinations in Kenya. The Ewaso Nyiro River is a permanent water supply for the wildlife in the area and it acts as a magnet, making this a great safari destination for people who want to get away from the crowds. Lion, cheetah and leopard can often be seen on game drives, as well as elephant, hippo and buffalo. Giraffe, waterbuck and zebra wander the open plains alongside gerenuks - a rather odd looking member of the gazelle family who is easily distinguishable by their extremely long necks and their ability to stand on their hind legs to reach high into bushes in order to skim the leaves off the branches with their rough tongue. The river itself is home to a large number of Nile crocodiles too. Over 365 bird species have been identified including secretary birds, sunbirds, bee-eaters and the blue necked and legged Somali ostrich.
After 3 nights here a light aircraft flight flies you directly down to the Masai Mara where you will spend 4 nights in a tented camp overlooking a hippo pool in the heart of the reserve. The Masai Mara offers what some consider to be the best game viewing in Africa. Big cats dominate game drive viewing but in addition, the plains are roamed by elephants, cheetah, giraffe and zebra. From August through to October the plains are also alive with millions of wildebeest who have migrated here from the neighbouring Serengeti National Park in Tanzania in search of fresh grazing grass.
