Legendary Tanzania

Summary Of The Route and Costs

Come on a  journey to meet the most privileged primates on the planet - the wild chimpanzees of Mahale. Add onto this a safari in one of the more remote National Parks of the Southern Circuit and you have a safari holiday that is legendary beyond all belief.

After a night in Arusha to recover from any lost sleep from an international flight to Tanzania's Kilimanjaro Airport, you board your light aircraft and head to Katavi National Park. The flight is about 4 hours, and illustrates just how remote and untouched this part of Tanzania is. There is nothing but wilderness for miles as you fly over the country. Your 4 nights here will come with a huge dose of almost old-fashioned safari freedom, and a special sense of intimacy with this extraordinary natural environment.

On your day of departure, a short flight of 25 minutes takes you over the Mahale Mountains and lands on the banks of Lake Tanganyika. Once you arrive you will be met by your guide and taken by dhow to Greystoke Mahale. The boat trip takes about an hour and a half and skims along the shoreline of the impossibly clear Lake Tanganyika with the Mahale Mountains rising from the beach. Turning the corner and catching a first glimpse of the iconic Greystoke beach and camp is always a memorable moment.

For your 3 nights here, you will share the mountains and the lake with so many animals, but it's the chimps that will really inspire you. Time spent with them is time away from everything else that is ordinary. But, there's more. Hike the forest paths looking for all the other animals who quietly live here. Swim in pools up in mountain waterfalls, take a kayak out for a dawn paddle and enjoy the sunrise coming up over the mountains. Have sundowners on the old wooden dhow, stopping to fish along the way, or just relax on the warm sands of the beach with a drink in hand.

Your flight back to Arusha takes about 5 hours, and you will then be transferred back to Kilimanjaro to check in for your flight home.

Summary Of The Itinerary

Holiday Title: Legendary Tanzania

Countries Visited: Tanzania

Day 1

Arrive into Kilimanjaro Airport.

Go through Immigration, collect your luggage and clear Customs, then make your way to the Arrivals Hall, where you will be met by your transfer driver who will be holding a sign board with your name on it. You will then be transferred to Arusha Coffee Lodge for an overnight stay.

Lying on the gentle rolling foothills that cascade down from the ever-present Mount Meru is the bustling and vibrant town of Arusha. It is here on the outskirts of this town, hidden amongst one of Tanzania's largest coffee plantations, that you will find Arusha Coffee Lodge, a perfect haven to relax in before any African safari.

Day 2

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to Arusha Airport, where you will check in for your flight to the Katavi National Park.

Light Aircraft Transfer Seat in Plane Rate operated by Nomad Tanzania - MON AND THURS ONLY (Light Aircraft): Fly from Arusha (ARK) departing at 08:00 to Katavi Airstrip, arriving at 11:10

From the air, you have to look carefully to spot your camp and you'll find your eyes are immediately drawn to such wide open spaces and less to the detail - that's the promise of Katavi - a total absorption into the natural world. Chada Katavi is stylish and wonderfully comfortable. The game is everywhere in Katavi - so much so in fact, that you often don't have to leave your tent veranda to see all kinds. Elephant are frequent visitors, attracted to the shady fruit trees, and vast herds of buffalo graze on the flood plain, sometimes right in front of camp.

4 nights at Chada Katavi

Day 6

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to the airstrip, where you will board your flight to the Mahale Mountains National Park.

Light Aircraft Transfer Seat in Plane Rate operated by Nomad Tanzania - MON AND THURS ONLY (Light Aircraft): Fly from Katavi Airstrip departing at 08:30 to Mahale Airstrip, arriving at 09:30

Greystoke Mahale sits on a pristine, white sandy beach overlooking the turquoise water of Lake Tanganyika in far-flung western Tanzania. The forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains range rise behind and, across the water, you can often see the mountains of the Congo, some 60 km away. Your days start with eating breakfast whilst waiting to hear news of the whereabouts of the chimps and deciding what to do with your day. There are many choices as well as the chimp trekking: fishing, boat trips down the lake, gentle forest walks or a lazy afternoon on the beach. Evenings end with sundowners on the rocks of the headland, where drinks are served around the lamp-lit bar whilst the mountains, rising behind camp, disappear into the darkness.
