Sussi & Chuma

Victoria Falls - Zambia

Days 1 - 3: Victoria Falls - Zambia

Sussi & Chuma Location Map

Just a short drive away from the world famous Victoria Falls, Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma is built on a dramatic bend in the Zambezi, right on the edge of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.

A walking tour of The Falls is a must for anyone staying here. First described to Europe by explorer David Livingstone and known locally as the Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “the Smoke that Thunders”, the Falls make a constant roar and are accompanied by a cloud of brilliant spray where the mile wide Upper Zambezi falls 300 feet into the Lower Zambezi. Rainbows constantly form and collapse in the tropical sunlight over the waterfall.

Other activities include game drives in custom-built 4x4 safari vehicles into the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. The Park is home to elephant, impala, giraffe, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, zebra in large numbers and an exciting array of birds. It even has white rhino – the only place in Zambia where they can be seen. Guests may also be lucky enough to see a rare sighting of the wild dog that on occasion pass through the Park.

In addition, there can be few more thrilling ways to experience and understand African wildlife and the bush as a whole than by being on foot on a walking safari. The walking safaris are conducted at a leisurely pace and take about two hours. Morning walks depart at around 06:30 and include a break with tea, coffee and snacks. The afternoon walk start at around 16:00 and finish at a special sundowner spot where guests will be served drinks and canapés while enjoying the magnificent sunset.

Guests can also relax on a Zambezi River sundowner cruise - a truly great way to spend a couple of hours. Sipping on a cocktail while watching the sunset over the majestic Zambezi River is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Local village visits can also be arranged, as can fishing trips, and canoe excursions.

In between all the activities, the inviting swimming pool is perfect for just relaxing around, or you can book a spa treatment, or just enjoy a quiet drink in the elevated bar overlooking the Zambezi.

The accommodation consists of 12 tree houses connected by stilted wooden walkways. Each tree house enjoys superb views over the river. In addition, there are 2 private houses available, each with 2 bedrooms, their own dining areas and decks with plunge pools, and their own chef and house staff.

Baines' Camp

Okavango Delta

Days 6 - 8: Okavango Delta

Baines' Camp Location Map

Set amongst the shady trees and water of the Okavango Delta, the intimate Sanctuary Baines' Camp is named after the famed 19th century explorer and artist, Thomas Baines. This area, situated on a vast private concession neighbouring the Moremi Game Reserve, is superb for viewing all animal and bird species.

Guests here have the opportunity to see animals up close with your expert guide on morning and evening game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. A night game drive is the perfect way to see some of the nocturnal animals not active during the day time.

One of the best ways to see the wildlife around Sanctuary Baines' Camp is in one of the locally made dugout canoes, known as mokoros. These used to be carved from ebony but are now made from commercially grown wood and fibreglass to protect the fragile environment of the Okavango. In one of these traditional crafts it is possible to float around the waterways and lagoons that make up the Delta, looking for crocodiles in the water, but also getting a remarkable view of the plains game from a new and exciting angle. For the less intrepid, the camp also has motorised speedboats that can be used when the rivers are in flood. All water based activities are seasonal and based on the water levels of the Delta.

Walking safaris are a speciality at Baines', with skilled guides introducing the area's natural wonders. Find out how to track and follow even the most elusive of animals in the Okavango.

The camp features just 6 suites with en-suite facilities and 4 poster beds, set on elevated platforms in the tree line with private wooden decks that offer expansive views over the shimmering permanent water of the Boro River where hippo can often be spotted. Traditional safari ceiling fans create a cooling breeze at even the hottest times of the year. Should you wish, your bed can be wheeled out onto your deck for a night under the stars, or take an indulgent soak in an opulent star bath. At Baines' Camp, the sky's the limit.

The swimming pool and the wide wooden deck that surrounds the main dining and sitting room is the ideal place to relax while observing the varied wildlife present here.
