Looking to extend your South African holiday with something a little different? Then why not consider adding 4 nights to your trip, and take in the iconic Victoria Falls for 2 nights followed by a 2 night stay in the 'Elephant Capital of the World' - the Chobe National Park in neighbouring Botswana. Being so close together, it is no surprise that these 2 highlights are a popular combo and addition to any SA holiday.
A trip to Victoria Falls is certainly memorable. One of the 7 Wonders of the World, the sheer noise of the Falls as they cascade over the edge into the deep gorge is deafening, and the misty clouds of spray, occasionally broken by rainbows, are visible from over 30 km away - hence it's local name, Mosi-Oa-Tunya - "The smoke that thunders".
Enjoy 2 nights here, taking in the sheer wonder of the Falls from the various viewing points along the spray-soaked pathways. Choose either to stay on the Zimbabwe side or the Zambia side - and to maximise your Falls experience, why not take advantage of the UniVisa and visit both sides of the Falls during your stay here.
Then have 2 unforgettable nights on safari in the Chobe National Park, the 2nd largest National Park in Botswana. The Park is most famous for its elephant population, and today is home to an estimated 100,000 elephants - which is believed to be the highest concentration of elephants to be found anywhere in the world.
But it is not only elephants that live here in huge numbers - hippos are plentiful, and float lazily in the Chobe River during the day, emerging at dusk to graze along the river banks. Large herds of buffalo, zebra and lechwe (a type of antelope) are also common sightings, as are lion, hyena and cheetah.
As well as morning or afternoon guided game drives, take a sunset boat cruise down the Chobe River and view the wildlife as they come down to the waters edge to take a drink.
The direct flights from major airports in South Africa make this an easy add on to any South African holiday. Daily flights depart Johannesburg to both Victoria Falls Airport on the Zimbabwe side or to Livingstone Airport on the Zambia side and take 2 hours; or there is now a direct flight from Cape Town to Victoria Falls Airport which takes just under 3 hours.
If you want to do this 4 night combo as a trip after your safari in South Africa's Kruger National Park, you can also fly directly from the Nelspruit Kruger Mpumalanga Airport to Livingstone.
For those on a tight budget, the other option is to stay all the time at Victoria Falls and simply do a day trip across the border into Botswana - it means an early start but you get to have a boat cruise and a game drive in Chobe and lunch - so quite an exciting day trip all in all!
