Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Days 1 - 2: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp Location Map

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is nestled inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest impresses with a truly theatrical landscape - this is a region of volcanoes, jagged valleys, waterfalls, lakes and dramatic mountain ranges.

Gorilla Forest Camp is the ideal base for a gorilla tracking adventure in Bwindi as you are only minutes away from the start of your gorilla trekking adventure. The camp also often receives regular visits from the gorillas themselves, up to 4-6 visits per month. For the lucky guests in camp at those times, they may have the chance for a gorilla encounter without even leaving the camp!

After trekking the gorillas in the morning, in the afternoon guests can go on a community walk. The walk takes about 2 hours and begins with a stroll through a small tea farming project, where you can stop to meet the tea pickers and perhaps even learn how to pluck tea leaves along the way. Then visit a local beer brewery and see how they mash bananas to make a fermented brew which is mixed and distilled to make banana beer. From here, walk a short distance to the local clinic which Gorilla Forest Camp supports through various projects. Later, relax and enjoy a performance by the Batwa pygmy community before returning to the lodge.

For keen birders, a local expert can guide you on a fascinating 2-3 hour walk through the Park to see how many of the 350 bird species you can tick off your list.

The 10 comfortable canvas rooms are dressed with indigenous prints and furniture made from natural materials. Each tent has a spacious, stone-walled bathroom with a free-standing bath for a relaxing soak after a day’s trekking. The trees around the camp light up in the morning when the sun starts shining, and thanks to there being so few tents, the camp retains an intimate, exclusive feel, enabling you to experience Africa’s magic with the lightest of footprints yet with practically every mod con.

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp's communal area boasts a comfortable lounge with a well-stocked bar and elegant dining area, bestowing great views over the verdant rainforest. Come dusk, under star-strewn skies, and accompanied by the night-chorus, guests gather around the central campfire and swap stories of that day’s adventures. At mealtimes, expertly prepared dishes promise simple flavours and showcase fresh local ingredients
