Suggested Holiday Itinerary

3 Night Gorilla Trekking and Ishasha Safari

Summary Of The Route and Costs

A 3 night fly-in Uganda experience, combining a safari game drive in the Queen Elizabeth National Park and an unforgettable gorilla trek in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

You will arrive into Entebbe Airport and connect immediately onto a light aircraft flight across to Kihihi, which is midway between the Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Bwindi National Park.

You will enjoy a short game drive en-route to your first night's accommodation at Ishasha Wilderness Lodge, where you will sleep in a spacious framed canvas room nestled along the river bank. This area of the Park is the place to search for tree climbing lions, which are often seen lying along a branch in their favourite fig tree. Remember to look up, not straight ahead, when on your game drive here!

The following morning, you will enjoy another game drive where you may also spot the Park's other inhabitants, including elephant, leopard, buffalo and Uganda kob, as well as many species of birdlife.

You will then depart the QENP and head to Bwindi, where you will stay at the luxurious Bwindi Lodge. With dramatic views of the forest canopy across a serene stream, this is one of Uganda’s finest properties. The gorillas frequently come to relax in the verdant bush around the lodge and this is the perfect location for your gorilla tracking experience the following morning.

There are 3 gorilla families that can be easily tracked from Bwindi Lodge in the Buhoma Sector of the forest and the starting point for the trek is just a 5 minutes walk from the lodge. You may need to trek anything from 2-6 hours in total, but once you find your gorilla family, the one hour spent in their company will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.

When you return back to the lodge in the afternoon, if you have time you can visit a local tea plantation to find out how tea is grown, picked and processed - and of course there is the opportunity to sample the fine teas at the end of the tour too!

The following morning, you will depart on the drive back to Kihihi where you will board your flight back to Entebbe.

There is the option to combine this short Uganda experience with a safari trip to either Kenya or Tanzania as there are daily flights between Entebbe and the Masai Mara or the Serengeti. Rates and itineraries available on request.

Summary Of The Itinerary

Holiday Title: 3 Night Gorilla Trekking and Ishasha Safari

Countries Visited: Uganda

Day 1

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda and after having gone through Immigration and collected your luggage, make your way to the Aerolink counter where you will check in for your midday flight to the Kihihi Airstrip.

AeroLink 121 (Light Aircraft): Fly from Entebbe Intl (EBB) departing at 12:00 to Kihihi Airstrip, arriving at 14:40

You will be met at the airstrip by your guide and transferred to the southern Ishasha Section of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. This area is famously known for tree climbing lions. You will enjoy a brief game drive en-route to your lodge, arriving late afternoon in time to relax and freshen up before dinner is served. Ishasha Wilderness Camp is an idyllic retreat for people who truly enjoy the wilderness, coupled with superb accommodation and exceptional service. Resident troops of black and white Colobus and vervet monkeys abound and if you are lucky you'll spot a hippo wallowing lazily below the viewing deck. Wildlife roams freely through the camp and elephants in particular make frequent guest appearances.

Day 2

Depart after breakfast for a game drive in the Park. As well as tree climbing lions, the Park is also home to elephant, buffalo, leopard, giant forest hogs, warthog, chimpanzees, several other primate species such as baboons and the black and white Colobus monkey, topi antelope, Ugandan kob (a type of antelope found only in Uganda, South Sudan and the DRC) and over 600 bird species - the greatest number of bird species found in any of the East African national parks.

Continue onto the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park this afternoon. Bwindi is best known for gorilla trekking and is a dense, ancient forest with misty rolling hillsides.

Day 3

This morning you will get up very early and head off for your gorilla trek. Trekking the mountain gorillas is one of the most exciting wildlife experiences on earth. The trek will take between 2 and 6 hours, but is well worth the effort. You will be led by an experienced ranger who will tell you interesting facts about the plants and the forest wildlife, as well as the lifestyle of the gorillas.

Day 4

You will depart the lodge for the drive back to Kihihi Airstrip where you will board your flight back to Entebbe.

AeroLink 122 (Light Aircraft): Fly from Kihihi Airstrip departing at 14:45 to Entebbe Intl (EBB), arriving at 16:15

Check in for your international flight. Depending on the time of the international flight, there may be an opportunity to do an afternoon activity (additional cost), such as visit the Mbamba Swamps in search of the elusive shoebill, or visit the chimpanzee sanctuary on Ngamba Island.
