Okavango Delta
Vumbura Plains is a luxury camp situated in a private concession in the extreme north of the Okavango Delta. The concession includes a wide variety of habitats, diverse wildlife and an enormous traversing area of 60,000 hectares. The concession is leased from 5 villages through the Okavango Community Trust in a partnership that ensures that the benefits of ecotourism are shared with the neighbouring rural stakeholders.
The camp offers both land and water activities, principally nature viewing in varied habitats in open 4x4 vehicles, nature walks, fishing (on a catch and release basis), mokoro trips and boat excursions. Whilst exploring the spectacular ecology of this area, one can enjoy close-up viewing of lion, leopard, elephant, cheetah and buffalo along with all the plains game. Birding is fabulous here with immense species diversity and mind-boggling numbers. The Vumbura area is possibly the only area in the Okavango where one can see red lechwe (an animal that inhabits the fringes of the waterways) and sable antelope (an animal that prefers the dry countryside) on the same game drive.
You can also take to the skies in style and soar silently over the rich ecosystem of the Okavango Delta in a hot air balloon. Gaze over scenic splendour, watch elephant playing far below and fly eye-to-eye with an eagle. This experience ends with champagne and snacks and is available April to mid-October only (additional cost).
Vumbura Plains comprises of 2 satellite camps, Vumbura South and Vumbura North, each with its own main area with an expansive vista across the floodplains and furnished with idiosyncratic objets d’art. There are 14 rooms in total across both camps, which are raised off the ground and contemporary in terms of their design, with extensive use of light, wood and space. Each room includes a sunken lounge, a sala and a plunge pool.
Vumbura North's two family suites can each accommodate 4 guests. Each suite has two bedrooms - the main adult bedroom has a large sunken lounge and spacious showers whilst the second room is smaller and has standard en-suite facilities. The bedrooms are linked by a private wooden deck.
The main camp area at both camps has a raised dining, lounge and bar area tucked beneath a canopy of cool, shady, indigenous trees and with a magnificent vista across the floodplains. A star-gazing deck with comfortable cushions protrudes into the floodplain, a place to gaze upwards, or a convivial camp fire setting.
