Ngorongoro Serena Lodge

The unique Ngorongoro Serena Lodge clings to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, the largest and most perfect volcanic crater in the world.

Long and low, the lodge is built from local river stone and camouflaged with indigenous vines. Designed to blend completely into the landscape, it is entirely invisible from the floor of the crater some 600 metres below.

Deep within the crater, some 25,000 large mammals wander the plains, lakes and forests, including bull elephants, rhinos and lions.

Guests staying at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge can enjoy a variety of activities, including daily game drives down into the crater, sundowner drinks on the rim of the crater, picnic lunches, early morning breakfasts in the crater itself, guided nature walks around the crater rim, and nightly Maasai dancing.

Visits to local Maasai villages and cattle markets can also be arranged.

Each of the 75 rock-built rooms are strung around the crater rim. Each has its own rock-enclosed balcony, and all enjoy completely uninterrupted views of the volcanic amphitheatre far below. The rooms feature brass lamps, embossed leather headboards, and locally inspired decor including Masai carvings and stylised cave paintings.

The spacious Kimba Suite has a dressing area and natural stone en-suite bathroom, and an elegantly appointed sitting room with crater views and a stone-built balcony.

The main lodge areas are linked by arched stone passages and timbered decks. The lodge walls are also decorated with stylised prehistoric cave paintings and lit by flickering torchlight, and at the heart of the lodge there is a glowing fire, which is kept constantly alight.

The main restaurant is beautifully designed in a traditional Tanzanian style to create an enchanting dining experience. Floor-to-ceiling windows and double doors leading out on to an expansive terrace complement each meal with panoramic views of the Ngorongoro Crater.

General Information For Guests

All rooms have tea/coffee making facilities, bathrobes, slippers, mineral water, hair dryers, in-room safe, telephone, private balcony and a work desk and chair.

In addition the Kimba Suite has a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, and a sitting room with a mini bar. 

The main lodge has a restaurant, a bar, central fire and a gift shop.

The lodge is 180 km from Arusha.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available.

Breakfast (buffet style) is served at the lodge from 06:30 to 09:30.  Lunch (buffet style) is served at the lodge from 12:30 to 14:30.  Dinner is served at the lodge from 19:30 to 21:30. 

Additional dining options (availability/minimum numbers and additional costs may apply and pre-booking is essential) include:

A Crater breakfast - a bush breakfast is an experience not to be missed. Typically, guests are awakened by a very early morning cup of tea; they then set off down the steeply winding road that leads to the Crater floor. After a game drive through primeval forests and acacia groves, the guests arrive by the selected spot where a spectacular cooked breakfast is served. After breakfast, the game drive continues around the 120 km of roads that circle the lakes, forests and plains of this unique conservation area.

A Crater Lunch - this is normally provided as a picnic/lunchbox but if guests would prefer, a full cooked lunch can be arranged, which is typically cooked and served in the acacia groves.

Crater Rim Sundowners - whilst you can enjoy the sunset from the Serena property too, you can also choose to take a gentle drive to a scenic spot on the rim of the Crater, where chairs, lamps, a camp fire and bush bar with cocktail snacks will already have been set up. Musical entertainment can also be provided.

Bush Dinner (summer only) - this takes place at a scenic location on the rim of the Crater, with stunning views over the plains below. Timed to coincide with the setting of the sun, which on the Equator is around 18:00, the bush dinner will commence with a short drive to a panoramic spot on the Crater rim. Here, tables, chairs and lanterns will already have been set up, and a camp fire will have been lit. Beginning with sundowners around the camp fire, you will be entertained with Maasai dance and song while a 5 course dinner is prepared on the blazing charcoal BBQ. The choice of meat, fish and poultry will be supplemented by vegetarian choices, salads, fruit and desserts from the main lodge, and a full safari bar will be provided.
