Kalahari Plains Camp

Central Kalahari

Kalahari Plains Camp Location Map

Situated on an immense pan, Kalahari Plains Camp lies in a remote corner of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a place famed for vast herds of antelope followed by abundant predators – including the legendary black-maned Kalahari lions.

Dominating Central Botswana, the 5 million hectare Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. A place that may seem barren at first sight is in fact home to a full spectrum of plants and animals. Healthy wildlife populations are present in the area all year round, and with the arrival of the summer rains, the desert bursts into life.

An incredible variety of plains game such as springbok and gemsbok gather in their hundreds to graze, followed closely by lion, leopard, and one of the highest concentrations of cheetah in southern Africa. In the winter, the Kalahari is a typical desert, but general game is still easily seen, from the carnivores to wildebeest, red hartebeest and steenbok as well as some small predators. The birdlife in the reserve is equally diverse, with over 220 species recorded to date.

Head out on a game drive or full day excursions in open 4x4 vehicles and follow the seasonal movements of the wildlife, or take the opportunity to meet another culture on a bush walk and learn about the fascinating and ancient lifestyle of the San Bushman.

Kalahari Plains Camp comprises of 8 canvas units (including one family unit), each with its own sleep-out rooftop platform from which to enjoy the endless horizons and beautiful starry skies, as you are lulled to sleep by the sounds of Africa.

The main area consists of a lounge and dining area with a pool and sun deck. Solar power provides electricity and hot water, and innovative insulated canvas walls and roofs keep the temperatures inside comfortable.

With the clear night skies and no light pollution, the camp is also the ideal spot from which to view the incredible formations of the stars and planets, with the guides giving you a tour of the vast constellations.
