Khwai Private Reserve
Hyena Pan Tented Camp is located in the Khwai Private Reserve and is set in a forest just 12 km north of the Khwai River. The reserve borders the lush Moremi Game Reserve to the south, and the wilderness of Chobe National Park to the east,
This isn’t a place for those looking for opulence and extravagance - rather, it is a private piece of big-game Africa, where the wildlife encounters are authentic, intimate and always wild. Think nomadic herds of elephant and buffalo, lion, leopard and wild dog fiercely defending their territories, as well as kudu, red lechwe and herds of dainty antelope dotted across the plains. All this can be enjoyed on morning and afternoon game drives through the 200,000 hectare concession and along the Khwai River.
Around 20 minutes from camp is an underground hide. A photographer's dream, get up close and personal with the wildlife as they come down to enjoy a drink and cool off. Make sure your camera is charged and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience. You can also spend the morning or afternoon atop a 5m high elevated platform, also close to camp, or take a game walk with one of the informative guides.
The 8 tents at Hyena Pan look over a watery lagoon of the same name. In the morning, you’ll open your tent flaps straight on to the trumpeting elephant in the lily-filled waters below, spend your siesta watching herds splash and snort, and fall asleep to antelope grazing just outside your canvas walls.
In the heart of the camp, and you’ll find the dining deck and lounge areas, along with comfy sofas and a mini-splash pool. When darkness falls, the night is best spent in the open-air boma with a nightcap or 2.
For those looking for a unique way to spend time in the bush, there is also the opportunity to spend the night in one of the 3 fabulous Skybeds, deep within the reserve. Each “room” is actually a 3-storey raised platform, which overlooks a waterhole. Charmingly rustic yet perfectly stylish, you’ll find a bathroom on the first floor, and on the top floor there is an enormous double bed, draped in white linens and a feather duvet, all completely open to the stars.
