Gorongosa National Park
Explore Gorongosa was the first private safari concession awarded within Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, and offers guests the first real in-depth, ecotourism exploration of Gorongosa after an absence of many years since the civil war in Mozambique. The Park has an incredible biodiversity and game stocks are increasing every year, and you can explore this magical Park on classic walking and game-drive safaris based out of the comforts of the luxurious custom-designed tented Explorers Camp.
This is not a typical Big 5 safari experience, it is more of a wilderness experience with excellent game sightings possible but not guaranteed. The bush is very authentic, wild and special. The story of the rebirth of the Park and the projects associated with the Park is a big part of why guests come to Gorongosa.
Gorongosa is an incredible birding destination. Over 400 species are believed to be found in the region, with more than 220 residents recorded in the Park itself. A couple of hours spent in the right places may well net over 100 species in a sitting. Explore Gorongosa can also arrange trips up Mount Gorongosa, one of the last remaining rainforests in Southern Africa and home to the legendary Green Headed Oriole, and one of only 4 places to see Swynnerton's Robin, amongst many other 'specials'.
The eating, chillaxing and social area of Explorers Camp features an open-air library and lounge, as well as a spacious canvas mess tent for when the weather is not too friendly. Dining takes place pretty much anywhere it is requested with the focus on excellent taste and even better company. If one wishes, there are hammocks to swing in, trees to climb, and a campfire to muse over... all in all, Explorers is an experience within an experience.
Featuring a handful of spacious and quirky tented suites, Explorers Camp is certainly not your average bush camp. Each suite has an alfresco 'en-tent' bathroom comprising an eco-innovative waterless toilet and a fantastic wash-in-the-wild shower designed to give you privacy and a feeling of freedom all at the same time.
You can also spend a night or 2 at the light wilderness fly-camps, the Gorongosa SkyBeds, which are set up at a few stunning sites in and around the Park such as at the Murombodzi waterfalls and on top of Mount Gorongosa.
