Damaraland Camp Location Map

Damaraland Camp is situated in the Huab River Valley in one of the best wilderness areas in Namibia, offering endless vistas across stark plains, ancient valleys and a stunning ochre-purple mountain backdrop. The star-gazing at night is superb, because of the crystal-clear skies.

Activities revolve around nature drives into the Huab River valley in search of the rare and endangered desert elephant, the last free-roaming elephants who have successfully adapted to living in the harsh desert conditions.

Guests can also enjoy guided nature walks, where gemsbok, springbok and kudu are often sighted, as well as many birds.

Damaraland is world-famous for its ancient rock art, and guests on stays of 3 nights or more can take a day drive to visit some of these remains and marvel at the artists of ages past.

Cultural activities can also be arranged, where guests can learn about the unique heritage of the local peoples, which include Nama-Damara, Herero, Owambo, and the displaced Riemvasmaakers of South Africa. This activity allows you to respectfully engage with these communities and it also includes a visit to the local Bergsig School.

The accommodation comprises of 9 large and extremely comfortable 'Meru-style' walk-in tents, each with their own private patio with stunning views of the valley. Each tent has its own en-suite bathroom, where the hot water is solar powered. There is also one Family Tent which sleeps up to 4 people in two adjacent rooms connected by a walkway.

The main area comprises of a lounge and bar area, and a dining area with a 'family' style table where all meals are served. An open campfire and outdoor dining 'boma' area are enjoyed during calm evenings.

There is also a natural rock swimming pool.

Directions For Drivers

From Otjiwarongo: Take the C38 to Outjo. Here you turn right on to the C39 and drive to Khorixas. From Khorixas take the C39 west, passing the Petrified Forest and the turn-off to the Twyfelfontein engravings.

After crossing the Huab River (there is no sign, but it is a very wide, sandy river crossing that is obvious), you will climb a slope to a small hamlet on the left, called Vrede. There is a derelict yellow lorry on the right at this village and a distinct sandstone outcrop one kilometre or so further on.

Go past this village up a very steep pass, and on the down slope you will see the Damaraland Camp signpost on the left, at a hamlet called Fonteine Pos, 12 km from the river crossing.

If you are not in a 4x4 vehicle, you will be met at either 14h00 or 17h00 at Fonteine Pos. The community there will take care of your vehicle for you and show you where to park it. #

The camp has been advised that you will arrive for the 5 pm pick up point - please confirm if you would like to change this to the 2 pm pick up. Please note that if you do not arrive in time for the pick up times, the community will radio the camp for somebody to come meet you. However, it will take about 40 minutes for the driver to drive from the camp to the pick up point, so please try to arrive in time for the times mentioned above.

General Information For Guests

The camp is comprised of ten elevated, spacious, adobe-style thatched rooms (including a family unit), each with a large deck where you can contemplate the desert. Off the main area are a pool, open campfire, and outdoor boma – canopied with countless stars in crystal-clear night skies.

The en-suite rooms all have electrical outlets, fans, mosquito nets and tea/coffee making facilities. Each lodge has its own lounge area in addition to the verandah / deck, and there is complimentary internet access in the rooms.

The main lodge has a bar and dining area, a library and a pool.

Activities available include morning/afternoon nature drives, guided nature walks (weather permitting and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide), and excursions to Twyfelfontein and to local communities.

There is a laundry service available, and credit cards are accepted at the camp.
