Samburu Eco-System
Samburu Sopa Lodge is located in the Samburu Game Reserve. The lodge is built atop raised ground allowing panoramic views of distant Samburu hills to one side and El Ndonyo Keri (the Samburu name for Mount Kenya) on the other.
Lion, cheetah and leopard can often be seen on game drives, as well as elephant, hippo, and buffalo.
Giraffe, waterbuck and zebra wander the open plains, alongside gerenuks - rather odd looking members of the gazelle family, who are easily distinguishable by their extremely long necks, and their ability to stand on their hind legs to reach high into bushes in order to skim the leaves off the branches with their rough tongue.
The public areas of the lodge are airy and spacious with views of the surrounding area. The reception area is decorated with local artifacts, and rich earth colours typical of the Samburu area have been well blended. There is a waterhole which affords guests the opportunity for wildlife viewing right in front of the reception area too.
Located next to reception, the bar has a an uninterrupted view of the surrounding area. The dining room also has a beautiful view and the furniture is unusually carved, and the chairs have a cow horn shape on the back rest. Local stones and materials are tastefully displayed bringing nature into the lodge.
Thirty cottages forming buffalo horn pattern converge at the public facilities area, leaving the open end to free movement of the wildlife to access the waterhole. The architecture blends in with the area, to keep up with the style of the housing by the local Samburu people.
Each cottage has 2 tastefully appointed bedrooms, each with 2 queensize beds, shower and a private verandah.
Local material has been used in the construction, furnishings and interior decoration. High ceilings and space ensure that the rooms are airy and comfortable.

Sambura Sopa Lodge was a beautiful location, the decor and surroundings were perfect and the service provided by the staff was outstanding. We were the only guests during our 2 day visit which for us was perfect, although not so for them. However, it did give us the opportunity to engage with the staff and talk about their way of life and culture. The game drives took our breath away and we were very fortunate to see the big five and so much more at Samburu. Being amongst a herd of elephants was emotional and slight nerving too when we saw the baby ones being protected by their mothers, we even met the team from Save the Elephants who were tracking the group. We utilised the pool area and visited the Sambura village where we were able to hand over gifts to the school teacher.

Our first Safari experience was amazing and will certainly be returning to experience another in 2017.
Our Driver/Guide John was truly amazing and made our holiday magical, very punctual, knowledgeable, courteous and friendly.
Whilst all places provided a good services, our favourite were Samburu Sopa and Mara River Lodge purely to the exceptional hospitality received from arrival to departure and would like to return to both lodges again.
