Amakhala Game Reserve

Quatermain's Camp Location Map

Set in a secluded valley, Quatermain's Camp embodies the original spirit of safari. This intimate camp offers you the opportunity to experience 'Africa under canvas' with just three 1920s style safari tents fitted out with military campaign style furnishings.

Your hosts will do their very best to make sure that you are enveloped by the natural world and that you will return home refreshed and with a new sense of wonder and understanding of the wildlife around you.

The lodge is in a Big 5 area so guests will have a chance of seeing elephant, white and black rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion as well as a variety of other game including hyena, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, many species of antelope and much more. Your ranger will also delight in showing you the smaller members of the ecosystem as well as the birds and plants.

Guided bush walks can be conducted upon request in a "soft game" area and as such has no dangerous animals present.

Relax on your own private deck and if you are lucky you may see an elusive bushbuck or hear the cry of the African fish eagle. Each en-suite tent is equipped with military campaign style furniture similar to that used by the early explorers.

At night as you lie under canvas one of the highlights of your stay is sure to be drifting off to sleep to the sounds of nature - you can frequently expect to hear jackals calling, the beautiful voice of the fiery-necked nightjar, maybe a screeching barn owl, or if you are fortunate, the roar of lions.

Start TestimonialI loved Quatermains as my first safari experience, it really was like going back to the 20's. All of us sitting round the fire at night eating dinner was great. The tent was amazing and the reserve had so much to see.End Testimonial

Start TestimonialWe enjoyed the safari at Quartermain's and it was definately the best part of our 3 week trip to SA. We did and saw so much there, that we felt we had been there much longer than 48 hrs. They are a great team who obviously enjoy their work. On the last morning we went for a bush walk that was amazing.End Testimonial

Approximately 80km from Port Elizabeth(Gqeberha), turn left at the Carnarvon Dale signposted entrance for about 3km, where you can leave your vehicle and you will be transported to the camp. Vehicles will remain at Carnarvon Dale. Please note that on busy days the ranger may already be transferring another group down to the camp, so if no ranger is present please don't worry, one will soon appear!

General Information For Guests

The en-suite bathrooms have hot and cold running showers and flushing toilets. Towels are provided.

The camp has a limited bar facility.

Please be aware that as the camp is deep in the bush they do not have mains electricity and so we recommend that you charge camera batteries etc before arriving at the camp. The camp uses a combination of paraffin lamps and solar power for lighting.

Amakhala Game Reserve is populated by a variety of wildlife including elephant, giraffe, rhinos, lions, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and many other species. Twice daily 3 to 4 hour game drives depart directly from the camp and are guided by experienced rangers.

An example itinerary per day is like this:

Morning game drives depart at approximately 06:45 (subject to the time of sunrise) with a hot drink and rusks at 06:30 before leaving. The morning game drive will return to camp just after 10:00.  Brunch will be served on return from the morning game drive.

Afternoons are free for you to enjoy as you wish until the afternoon game drive departs. A lunch will be served at approximately 14:30.

The afternoon game drive aims to depart at approximately 15:00, to arrive back at camp at around 19:00. Beverages and snacks are provided on this game drive for guests to enjoy a sun downer on the reserve. A traditional South African dinner will be served on arrival back at camp. As with all meals, the camp can cater for specific diets with prior notice.

There is also the option of doing a guided birding walk or a guided bush walk (in a non-dangerous game area) or a guided Wilderness Walk in a Big 5 area (max 4 guests and over 16 years of age only). Prebooking is essential - please advise your Travel Butlers consultant if you would like to do any of these walks. Night drives can also be arranged, as can horse trails and bird walks.

Your rate includes a Conservation/Community Levy which will primarily fund the anti-poaching units and a dedicated rhino monitoring programme to preserve and protect the rhinos of Amakhala Game Reserve. In addition, a percentage of the Levy will also go to support their award-winning Conservation Education Programme, which enables local school children to visit the Amakhala Conservation Centre to learn about wildlife conservation and sustainability for future generations.
