Kwara Camp

Kwara Camp

Okavango Delta

Kwara Camp Location Map

Kwara Camp is located in the northern part of the stunning Okavango Delta within the private Kwara concession - a magnificent wilderness area in excess of 1,700 square kilometres bordering the Moremi Reserve.

Overlooking a secluded lagoon, in addition to daily day and night game drives, guests can enjoy gliding along in the special silence of a mokoro through crystal-clear waters or boat trips on a double-decker boat to the famous Godikwe Lagoon in the Moremi Game Reserve, which is known for its abundant varieties of birdlife especially during nesting season.

Fishing is also a popular activity with spinning equipment provided, however if you prefer fly fishing then you will need to bring your own equipment. Please note fishing is only offered in the open season between March and December.

The Kwara area is also home to a variety of wildlife including, lechwe, sitatunga, reedbuck, bushbuck, hippo, crocodiles, elephant, buffalo, sable, roan, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, impala and tsessebe. Predators such as lion, hyena, wild dog, leopard and cheetah are also abundant in this part of the Delta and are regularly seen on game drives.

The 8 luxury safari-style tents are built on raised decks, within a grove of huge and ancient African ebony trees. Resident hippos will generally serenade you year round from the water on the floodplain in front of the camp. Each tent has its own viewing deck and en-suite facilities, including open-air showers which are sheltered. There is also a honeymoon suite with its own special bathroom with an antique slipper bath with the traditional ball and claw feet.

Highly skilled chefs prepare delicious meals to round off a perfect day in Kwara's watery wonderland.

The central area overlooks the lagoon, which is great for game viewing in itself. Many an afternoon can be peacefully whiled away from the comfortable sofas bird-watching from the main lounge. There is also a small pool, a well-stocked bar, tea/coffee making facilities, battery charging point and a small library. For those wanting a closer view of the game, there is a hide that includes extensive maps and spoor samples, in which first time safari guests can learn about the environment and wildlife in detail.

General Information For Guests

The rooms are en-suite including flush toilet, double sinks, outdoor showers and a safe. In addition each tent has a private veranda with deckchairs, the perfect place to relax and take in the magnificent views and soak up the atmosphere.

There is also a honeymoon tent with its own private verandah overlooking the lagoon but in addition its en-suite facilities include a free standing claw-foot bath.

The main area has a plunge pool, bar, lounge and also a hide. Just in front, towards the lagoon is the fire pit  where a light breakfast is served each day before heading off on activities. A laundry service is offered on a complimentary basis and credit card services are also available.

The game drives involves both a guide and tracker, this adds to the experience on 2 levels. You have 2 sets of eyes searching out the action, looking for tracks – this ensures a good chance of sightings, especially predators. In addition, having the tracker out front, concentrating on tracking, means that the guide is more able to talk to clients, keep them informed and to answer any questions. The vehicle takes a maximum of 4 guests in a vehicle - the camp will still however be using 9 seater (3 rows of 3 seats) vehicles, thus allowing groups of 5 or more guests travelling together to be in the same vehicle if they wish to.

As Kwara is in a private concession, the guides are allowed to drive off road in search of sightings and it also means that the lodge can do night drives with spotlights. 30% of fascinating mammals are mainly active at night, so this gives guests more opportunities to view them.

The mokoro trip is the perfect delta experience. There is nothing more relaxing than poling along the lagoon and channels with your guide, soaking up the atmosphere and seeing things from a totally  different perspective. The excursion is broken by morning tea on an island followed by a short walk to have a chance to experience the bush from ground level before heading back to camp in the mokoro.

Fishing is also offered at Kwara for 10 months of the year, but is prohibited in January and February as this is the peak breeding season.  Basic equipment is supplied, but avid fly-fishers are advised to bring their own equipment.

There is a double deck boat available at Kwara, offering a great view of what is going on at the water's edge beyond. From August to December there are visits to the nearby heronries, which is a very worthwhile experience for birders.
