Siwandu Camp

Selous Game Reserve

Days 1 - 3: Selous Game Reserve

Siwandu Camp Location Map

Siwandu Camp (previously known as Selous Safari Camp) is delightfully situated within an open palm forest on the shores of Lake Nzerakera, a massive lake adjoining the Great Rufiji River.  There are no fences so animals may wander freely through the camp and often do. Hippos moving through the camp are a nightly occurence and elephant frequently meander between the tents. The African sound of whooping hyenas and bellowing hippos is a constant background medley throughout the night. The area is also one of the best in East Africa to see wild dog.

The camp offers an exceptionally large array of activities to choose from be it by boat, vehicle or foot, and the guides will personally tailor all activities to suit each guest so that they get the most out of the reserve in the time they have available.

The camp as a whole is comprised of 2 separate camps, North (4 tents) and South (6 tents). In this way, there is never the feeling of having too many people around. Each camp has its own swimming pool, well stocked bar and dining area, and each has its own well supplied kitchen where the chefs produce the finest cuisine. All meals are complimented by a good wine selection.

All the spacious safari tents are widely spaced along the lake shore ensuring maximum privacy and wonderful views. Each tent is en-suite, and sits atop its own raised timber platform with a large verandah where you can sit with a cup of tea in the morning watching the bush come to life at sunrise, or nursing a gin and tonic as the bush gets ready for the night at sunset. Every room has a personal butler who is assigned to you for the duration of your stay.

For that intimate, quiet, wild feeling, Siwandu Camp is perfect for forgetting all the troubles of the modern world and immersing ones self in nature with just the right amount of luxury in a very remote wild location.

Ras Kutani

Swahili Coast

Days 4 - 10: Swahili Coast

Ras Kutani Location Map

Ras Kutani is set on a crescent of white sandy beach, washed by the gentle surf of the temperate Indian Ocean. The lodge is situated only 35 kilometers south of the port of Dar es Salaam on the Tanzania mainland but offers the perfect hideaway, far from the madding crowd. The setting ensures that feeling of being on your own tropical island.  The lodge is flanked by a fresh water lagoon abutting onto a coastal forest, which spills to the edge of the unspoilt and undeveloped beach.

The temperate seas and proximity of coral reefs ensure a wealth of marine life and interest for those keen on snorkelling. For those who prefer a somewhat drier experience kayaks are available to explore the fresh water lagoon. And when the surf is up boogie boards provide plenty of thrills in the surf nearby.

The tropical, coastal forest behind the lodge boasts some 132 different species of trees, home to 4 species of monkey, including the spectacular black-and-white colobus. As well as a forest walk you can also visit the nearby village nearby to taste Swahili life.

Turtles still come to nest along the shore of Ras Kutani in season, with opportunities for interested guests to become involved in the projects that continue to look out for their welfare.

The deserted beach is also ideal for long walks.

Accommodation is in 9 spacious, charming Lagoon Cottages constructed of natural, local materials that harmonise perfectly with the wonderful surroundings. Ethnic furnishings impart a sense of the Tanzanian coast's rich cultural heritage. Each cottage has its own en-suite bathroom and large veranda with views of the azure ocean. The chefs pride themselves on preparing the fresh 'fruit of the ocean' fare from the readily available local fish and crustaceans.

There are also 4 exclusive Hillside Suites with private plunge pools, with views over the forest and the ocean.

Check In / Check Out

Rooms may normally be occupied from 14:00 on the day of arrival and must please be vacated by 10:00 on the day of departure for the convenience of arriving guests.

General Information For Guests

Children aged 6 years and older are welcome.

The lodge is a 10 minute flight by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam to Ras Kutani private airstrip, or a 90 minute drive by road.

From June to August, Ras Kutani offers a very pleasant beach experience, with a cool temperature range of 16 degrees C at night to high 20 degrees C during the day.  The weather tends to be dry and sunny but cool in the evenings. This is also the season to watch turtles hatch on the beach and glimpse the breaching and blowing of the migrating humpback whales.

As the months edge towards the short rains, expected between November and December, the temperatures will begin to rise during the months of September and October.  With fans in all the rooms it is still very comfortable to sleep at night. The short rains which follow usually offer some light showers or rain overnight so is unlikely to spoil your holiday.

From mid December to February, the northerly winds pick up which provides a pleasant cooling of the increasing temperatures, which range between mid 20 degrees C at night and mid 30 degrees C during the day.

During the long rains, in April and May, the camp is closed.

The beach at Ras Kutani stretches out to open water and is not affected by the shallow reef tides of other areas.  With the added benefit of weak currents, the beach makes for great swimming at all times. The water temperatures are pleasant at all times of the year too. The marine equipment including kayaks, masks, snorkels, fins and boogie boards are complimentary and subject to availability.  Please bear in mind that the sea is open water and therefore not protected by a reef and snorkelling conditions need to be assessed on a daily basis.

The forest walk is self-guided, with guests picking up a map and list of trees from the reception.

Bookings for the spa are made on site and are subject to availability and paid on the final bill.

A 5% surcharge is applicable for any extras that are paid for by credit card (MasterCard, Visa and Amex are accepted).  US Dollar bills will only be accepted if they are post-issue 2006.

All rooms have a room safe and a fan.  A laundry service is offered but please note that due to Tanzanian culture they are unable to accept ladies underwear but washing powder is provided in the room. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available at the main reception and around the pool.
